Special Programs for Adults

Two exciting small group programs were offered this Fall. Both were free and open to the public.

THOUGHTFUL CHRISTIANITY

Does Christianity sometimes make you squirm a bit?  Are you curious about Christianity but turned off by all the stereotypes? Are you more interested in discussing the right questions than being told the “right” answers? Or are you just wondering how to reconnect or reclaim your faith?

If this sounds like you…  Join us on

Sunday evenings from Oct. 4 - Nov. 22 (5:00 - 7:00pm)

as Dr. Lentz engages us in a discussion of these questions and more:

  • Who is Jesus?
  • What exactly is “Salvation”? — From what, for what, so what?
  • What’s the point of reading the Bible and what are some good ways to read it?
  • What about all the other religions? Do Christians really believe they’ll be the only ones in Heaven?

Monday Evenings

Oct. 19, Oct. 26, and Nov. 2

7:30 - 9:00pm

A 3-Week Series with the author of

BIBLICAL LITERACY

CRWU professor of religion and Forest Hillʼs own Timothy Beal will lead a series of three conversations based on his new book, Biblical Literacy: The Essential Bible Stories Everyone Needs to Know. The book offers a fun, no-experience-necessary reading experience with the Bible’s “greatest hits” - those stories that have had the greatest influence on art, literature, and politics in western culture, both past and present.

Timʼs work has benefited greatly from the classes heʼs taught at Forest Hill. He hopes the book will be ideal for study groups including religious and non-religious readers of all kinds. So join us, and be among the first to test it out!

PRAISE FOR BIBLICAL LITERACY

“With skill and insight, Timothy Beal has given us a great gift: a lucid and engaging introduction to the most important book ever published.” — Jon Meacham, editor of Newsweek

“For those who are approaching the Bible for the first time … there is no better place to turn than Timothy Beal’s Biblical Literacy. Here you will find numerous gems … along with pithy, helpful, and at times even witty, introductions.” — Bart D. Ehrman, author of Jesus Interrupted

“Beal skillfully retells key biblical narratives but also cogently relates them to significant events in history. This is a readable, informative and timely book.” — Harvey Cox, author of The Future of Faith

“Tim Beal has written about the rich, thick connections between the Bible and popular culture … In a society of deep and dangerous disconnects, the connects of this book serve exceedingly well.” — Walter Brueggemann, author of The Prophetic Imagination
