A Letter from Pastor John Lentz:
You have been hearing a lot about Greater Cleveland Congregations (GCC) lately. As a new member of the Strategy Team I have been privileged to be on the inside as we organize our faith communities to hold our elected officials accountable to equity and justice.
As you know, GCC has been encouraging the Cuyahoga County Council and the Cleveland City Council to slow down and re-think the Q arena renovation deal.
Let’s be clear: GCC is not against the Cavs or against downtown development. What GCC wants is for the council to leverage their power to make sure this deal helps stressed neighborhoods throughout the city. We want more jobs to be distributed evenly throughout Cleveland and we want Mental Health Crisis facilities to be funded to help more people and alleviate crowded jails.
GCC had a powerful meeting last Thursday where three county council members pledged their support to slow down the deal. AND on Tuesday, March 21 GCC is planning a bus trip to Detroit to make sure that Dan Gilbert, owner of the Cavs, knows GCC’s resolve.
Come with me and many others on this day trip. We leave in the morning and will be home by dinner time. We will have a meeting outside of Mr. Gilbert’s office complex, joining our friends from the Detroit faith community. It will be inspiring, educational, and even fun.
