The Flower in the Sidewalk ~ 1 Samuel 2: 1-10, Mark 13: 1-8, Hebrews 10: 23-25

Sunday, November 18th, 2018

This morning’s sermon begins around 39 minutes in. Thirty years ago, I led a youth group mission trip to Washington D.C. We spent the days in neighborhoods of such poverty, blight and segregation that it was comparable to being in Haiti. But in D.C. these neighborhoods were no more than a mile away from the […]

The Bible ~ 1 Thessalonians 2: 13; 2 Timothy 3: 16-17

Sunday, July 1st, 2018

The sermon begins at the 23 minute mark. One evening last week Lisa Vahey told this story at the meeting of those who volunteer their time to be with Leonor, Adan and Louis Mario as they live with us in Sanctuary. She shared with us that often she takes Adan (who is four) to the […]

In Your Lap ~ Isaiah 40:1-11; Mark 1:1-8

Sunday, December 10th, 2017

New members joined today. The sermon on this 2nd Sunday in Advent begins around the 36 minute mark. There was once a young preacher who was given this advice: If, in the middle of your sermon, you forget your train of thought, just step back, pound the podium, and repeat the title of the sermon – […]

Staying Awake ~ Mark 13: 24-37

Sunday, December 3rd, 2017

The morning’s sermon begins just before the 16 minutes mark. Member Mary Ann Breisch’s haunting composition Refugee is sung as the Offertory just before the 31 minute mark (text follows the sermon below.) Happy New Year! I bet you didn’t see that coming, did you? But you know today’s the first day of the new […]

Every 500 Years Or So ~ Jeremiah 31: 31-34; Romans 3: 19-28

Sunday, October 29th, 2017

Listen to the entire service online including, about 29 minutes in, Rev. Dr. John C. Lentz Jr.’s sermon Every 500 Years Or So on Jeremiah 31: 31-34 and Romans 3: 19-28. Welcome to Reformation Sunday. Yes, about every 500 years or so, the church gets all shook up and resettled and so here we are: […]

The Rose Ceremony ~ 1 Samuel 16:1-13

Sunday, March 26th, 2017

This is one of my favorite passages in all of scripture. Before reality TV and “The Bachelor” (or Bachelorette), God hands the rose to David!

Rejoice ~ Philippians 4: 4-7; Luke 1: 46-55

Sunday, December 11th, 2016

Happy Gaudete Sunday! Today is the third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin imperative for “Rejoice!” You may notice that the Garretts lit a pink candle on the Advent wreath as well as the purple candles from weeks one and two. That pink candle symbolizes joy and so I say to […]

Keep Watch ~ Romans 13:11-14

Sunday, November 27th, 2016

As you know, today is the First Sunday of Advent. Throughout Advent we prepare for the coming of Jesus.  When we talk about preparing for Jesus it’s a little confusing, even for those of us who have been a part of the church for a long time. During Advent we prepare for the birth of […]

Back in Business ~ Luke 7: 11-17

Sunday, June 5th, 2016

I don’t doubt for a moment that Jesus brought the son of the widow of Nain back to life. Jesus was reported to be a wonder worker, a healer – and the gospels relate several occasions when Jesus brought a dead person back to life. After all, our Christian faith’s foundation is resurrection.

Waiting for Superman ~ Mark 11:1-11

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Just last Sunday someone pointed out that my name is a Biblical one and we don’t hear of too many Lois’ these days. My parents took great pride in the fact that they selected a Biblical name for me—Lois is the grandmother of the apostle Paul’s right hand man, Timothy—but they also loved it because […]
